生物学 – Prospective Students
Welcome to our Benedictine College community, and thank you for visiting our 生物学 Department page! We have five full-time faculty members in our department, and we teach a wide variety of courses ranging from Plant 生物学 to Developmental 生物学, from Human Anatomy & Physiology to Animal Behavior, and from Mechanisms of Evolutionary Change to Kansas Vertebrates Natural History. Our five faculty members are all Ph.D. trained scientists who are passionate about combining teaching and research in our classrooms and labs, on our campus, and in our greater Atchison community. We all make it a priority to involve students in our research, providing opportunities for students to be involved with original research and preparing them for entry into their early careers or graduate or professional programs. We are an energetic group of biologists, and we are excited about the momentum we are building in our department, the courses we are teaching, and the research and community involvement projects we are leading.

What sets the Benedictine College 生物学 Department apart?
Active research involving students in every phase of the research process, from initiating ideas and hypotheses to field and lab work, to data analysis and presentation of findings at professional conferences and in scientific publications. We are enthusiastically involved in the Discovery Program at Benedictine College. Each year, as many as a dozen or more of our students are co-authors on Discovery Projects.
Opportunities to be involved in exciting trips and activities centered around gaining a better understanding of the natural world and experiencing new people, 的地方, and experiences.

Our alumni have been successful in a wide variety of fields ranging from human medicine to wildlife biology, or veterinary science to dentistry.
Our department has diverse facilities and resources. We have several active research projects taking place on the Benedictine Bottoms Wildlife Area (more information here), an approximately 2,000-acre mitigation site owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and managed by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & 旅游. We also curate an active herbarium with approximately 7,000 specimens dating back to the 19th century and focusing on local and regional flora. In addition, we have extensive collections of bird, 哺乳动物, 鱼, and invertebrate specimens for study. We also have exciting lab equipment, including a complete C. elegans RNAi library, an MJ Mini Personal Thermal Cycler, numerous monocular and dissecting light microscopes, and Vernier physiology equipment.
